Math Testimonials

He’s a whole package deal of teacher, mentor and personal cheerleader hitting you all at once.

Choosing to attend tuition classes with Chu Wei is like unsuspectedly walking into a FairPrice Xtra megastore, when all you expected was an ordinary mama shop. He’s a whole package deal of teacher, mentor and personal cheerleader hitting you all at once. Sure, he makes sure to teach you the relevant syllabus, and yes, he’s patient and concise when he’s teaching. In fact, he makes sure to explain each math question using various diagrams and methods, until everyone in the class understands it.

However, he’s so much more than just your tuition teacher with a mission to reteach what you should have learnt in school. He’s an entrepreneur at heart- he’s always constantly changing his teaching methods and platforms to best fit our learning styles and every tutorial question is freshly tailored to perfection; so that while they still retain their ability to make us forlornly question our ability to do math, they remain relevant. Furthermore, he’s splendidly candid and frank. He’s unafraid to tell us to buck up when we get complacent or lazy, and he’s certainly not hesitant to push us when we lack motivation to study. It may sound exhausting and awful, but honestly, it benefited all of us in the end. Chu Wei is also considerably knowledgeable about a great wealth of things, like university application, and is always willing to advise us. He’s incredibly supportive of the decisions we make, and is like, as I mentioned, our personal cheerleader. He is one of the rare few tutors I have ever had to be as concerned as he is about his students’ welfare, and their prospective careers. The bottom line is- there may be an abundance of tuition teachers out there for your picking (after all, this is Singapore we’re talking about), but there are only so many who will go beyond their duty as merely a tutor. Frankly, I was never fond of lecture theatre- style tuition classes where you share a teacher with 30-50 other people because it always feels impersonal and distant. Hence, if you find that you want a tutor who values your opinion and takes time to adjust to your learning style and pace- he is the teacher for you.

This really made me realise that Chu Wei was not teaching for the sake of it, but truly because he wanted us to fully grasp and learn to love Math.
Every lesson with Chu Wei was to say the least, an emotional rollercoaster ride. Each lesson was tailored to perfection, with every minute little detail taken care of. Be it the ridiculously challenging tutorial questions to the little quotes of encouragement that Chu Wei never failed to add for every worksheet, he had everything perfected. And for this very reason, I found myself slowly but surely understanding what I was learning. The tutorials and tests that Chu Wei prepared was always a struggle. Every question was something new, each harder than the last, and not one would you have found in any assessment book. Though at times demoralising and frustrating, it truly prepared me for any question that was to be thrown my way. Chu Wei always made it his goal to make sure that if we entered the class with absolutely no clue of how to solve a math question, by the time we left, we would have mastered it. He made sure that we fully grasped every concept in each tutorial and never moved on if even one of us was slightly skeptical and unsure. Being someone who never liked having to accept concepts or as some would say ‘logic’ that was taught to me if i didn’t see eye to eye with it, I would often argue to make my point. Often teachers would brush me off saying “That’s just how it is”. Chu Wei, however, was different. I still remember once when this has happened in class, he went out of his way to make me understand the concept. He did not brush me off nor did he put me down. Instead, he explored my reasoning and patiently, yet skillfully, crafted a method to convince me of why my argument was invalid. This really made me realise that Chu Wei was not teaching for the sake of it, but truly because he wanted us to fully grasp and learn to love Math.
The effort Chu Wei puts into getting to know each and every one of his student is truly amazing. He makes it extremely easy to contact him for anything, be it a math question that i need help solving or simply if i need someone to talk to. It’s truly remarkable how much Chu Wei cares for his students’ welfare. Often, it is said that outstanding teachers demonstrate a “deep knowledge and understanding of their subject”. Although passion is inspiring, a deep knowledge and understanding of their students is just as important. Respect isn’t about having 30 silent faces shouted into submission. Not once did Chu Wei raise his voice at us. Not once did he lose patience. He treated us as humans; as his friend, he knew what we were talking about and took an interest in what we had to say, and naturally earned our respect. Perfectly planned lessons are one thing, but, to an angsty teen like me, showing that he cared and was always there to talk to really helped me get through Os.
Let learning be as a child who laughs, running up a helter-skelter at a fun-fair. Every step is sheer joy, ascended with ease as the brain fills with a pure happiness, one born of curiosity and the anticipation of discovery. Then comes the “Aha” moment while exhilaratingly riding back to the ground, smiling, eager to find new stairs. This was Chu Wei’s belief as a teacher and it definitely showed in his lessons. With Chu Wei, learning to me was never a mountain I was forced to climb, finding reasons to blame and shame those who fail. I was never dictated where to climb and how, without restricting the exact destination, never once using bribes and threats of any kinds. He was a teacher I could never get the better of. Whatever witty retort I had, he had one better. He took my cheekiness and at times, rebelliousness, and turned it into an advantage for himself, but not through belittling me or stamping authority. He checked my behaviour with a style of humour I could relate to, aspire to even. When Chu Wei teaches, it is with the passion of a lifelong teacher, someone who lives to inspire a love of learning in the next generation.

“Chu Wei is also someone who clearly knows the education and examining system well, and accurately spots questions like a magician (including the actual A level questions).”

Chu Wei is a really dedicated teacher in many ways that I will be eternally grateful for. I was one of the students which joined late, about 2-3 months before my A levels, and I can say that this is one of the best decisions I’ve made. In class, he’s extremely knowledgeable pertaining to mathematics concepts and skills, and is really interactive in teaching us. His explanations are clear, precise and easy to understand. Outside of class, he puts in extra effort into getting to know students and imparting important life lessons for us. He takes his job seriously and diligently, coupled with his competence in teaching math, hence he will definitely be of great help to anybody who requires math tuition and is definitely one of the top choices around. He is highly qualified as a math instructor, having majored in math in university. He is also someone who clearly knows the education and examining system well, and accurately spots questions like a magician (including the actual A level questions). He is generous with his help, and will promptly respond to questions from students requiring help through whatsapp, and also in face-to-face, coming early before lessons start and staying back after lessons end, all to ensure students do well in their exams and in life. His tutorial is highly challenging and his standards and goals are high, which all goes to show how professional and capable he is.

On a more personal note, Chu Wei has been a real inspiration and a real good friend that I have been lucky to make. His support, encouragement and his motivation and drive to push us to do well, also inspires me to do strive for excellence, especially during the tough period of the A levels. Besides being a teacher, he is a role model and a close friend to the students. Him being there for me in the months leading up to the A levels has definitely made this stressful period of my life much more meaningful and memorable. He is a teacher that I will never forget, despite the short span of time we spent together, and a valuable friend in the years to come.

“Chu Wei was willing to take time off to go through past year papers with us despite that he was not obligated to.”

I was consistently performing poorly in my Maths with a C5 in my Amaths at ‘O’ Levels, I clearly remembered how I hated calculus and totally given up. However, I still went on to take H2 Maths in JC and unsurprising, I flunked my J1 CT. I got a U grade for my CT and that’s when I decided to join Chu Wei after I got introduced to him via word of mouth. His lessons certainly aren’t easy and the questions he challenged us to solve often left me dumbfounded. However, with the consistent drillings and practice, I can slowly see myself improving and taking a liking to Maths. His lessons are clear and precise as he thoroughly explains the concepts in ways that students can understand easily. Furthermore, Chu Wei, being a committed educator, is willing to stay back and provide additional consultations when necessary. I remembered underperforming for my Promos and MYE and Chu Wei was willing to take time off to go through past year papers with us despite that he was not obligated to. With his efforts, I managed to secure an A for my H2 Maths at ‘A’ Levels from the D I got in my prelims.

Otherwise, Chu Wei also ensures that other aspects of his students’ well-being are well taken cared of. He provides insights regarding university courses and gives sound advice to his student so as to enable them to make sound decisions. I would certainly recommend Chu Wei to potential students which are struggling with their Maths or seek to improve their grades.
